The Hill newspaper, which is the most influential publication of the US Congress, which is constantly read by senators, congressmen, experts of foreign policy and the general public, published an article by the Consul General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles Nasimi Aghayev in its February 18 issue.
In his article headlined “Time for Peace in the Caucasus”, the Consul General notes that there is a serious necessity for the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the background of the ongoing intense conflicts, and in this regard, there are great expectations for constructive steps taken by the new US administration.
As The Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles reports Naxcivantv.az the Consul General providing comprehensive information about the occupation and ethnic cleansing policy of Armenia against Azerbaijan in the article says that the legal foundations for achieving peace are strong enough, and in this sense there are numerous documents condemning the occupation policy of Armenia and expressing support for Azerbaijan\’s territorial integrity by the UN Security Council , UN General Assembly, Council of Europe, European Parliament, NATO, OIC, NAM and other major international organizations. The diplomat mentions that even the European Court of Human Rights confirmed the facts of occupation and ethnic cleansing of Azerbaijan’s territory in its decision adopted in 2015. Nevertheless, he says that the continuation of the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia is connected with the lack of international pressure on the government and the international legal system established after World War II for the preservation of peace in the world, in which the principles of territorial integrity are of great importance has eroded for the last few decades. The Consul General writes that this is very dangerous for the world and it is the responsibility of not only international organizations, but more importantly of major global powers to ensure the compliance with the international law.
The diplomat speaking about Khojaly genocide, which marks the 25th anniversary this week, notes that in 1992, 613 Azerbaijani civilians, including 300 children, women and elderly were brutally murdered by the armed forces of Armenia. In the article N. Aghayev reports that apart from this bloody massacre, 800,000 Azerbaijanis were expelled from their occupied ancestral lands and 20% territory of Azerbaijan was occupied by Armenia.
As the co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group, the diplomat expresses, it is hoped that with the new administration of the United States will intensify the efforts for finding a fair solution that will put an end to the illegal occupation of Azerbaijani territories and allow the refugees to return to their own lands.
Stating that Azerbaijan plays a central role in many important global transregional projects, N. Aghayev gives information about Azerbaijan-US partnership and also notes that the settlement of the problem in a short time will be beneficial for both the region and the world.
